Paros, the fourth largest island of the Cyclades is well-known as the beauty queen of the Aegean. The hills of Agii Pantes gently span downwards to lonely pebble-covered and wide sandy bays.

Instead of the usual barren landscapes of the Cyclades, the first impression of Paros is that of a mediterranean-green island. A well developed network of bus routes entirely encompasses Paros and its 120 km of coastline. Depending on the season, the main locations get approached up to 25 times a day: From the little seaport Naoussa, where half of the tourists' scene takes place, to the bathing resorts of Drios, or Pounta - the ferry port to the neighboring island of Antiparos, and Aliki - where one will come across the local airport and its tiny arriving hall.

In the South and East of Paros the idyll even raises: Acres of wheat and barley, beds of melons, orange- and lemon trees, olive groves, figs and almonds. There is even enough water to plant tomatoes, eggplants, cucumbers and, of course, vines. Out of the red Mantilaria and white Monemvasitika grapes, about a thousand local farmers produce near 2.5 million liters of wine every year.

The Wind- and Kite surf hangouts are awesome as well: More than four Beaufort turn the 700m spanning Golden Beach on the east coast every year into a pro-ground and the host for the windsurf world cup. Situated behind, one can catch a glimpse of a white hill right under the mountain of Kefalos: Marpissa, said to be the most beautiful village in Greece. 2km along, the byzantine trail spans upward to the flowery mountain village of Lefkes. Dozens of writers, painters, sculptors, musicians and poets turn Paros into the cultural hub of the Cyclades. Instead of exhilarated appearance, an authentic flair predominates the scene.

In the capital of Paros, Parikia, the other half of the tourists' setting takes place. People stroll through the white alleys, settle back below the Kastro or rest at one of the tavernas opposite of the gorgeous church of Ekatontapyliani, the oldest church of Greece which has been steadily in service. Around midnight everyone once more grazes the mile long water front with tavernas, clubs and countless bars at grasp. Everything wide open, just like the people of this island.

Panagia Ekatontapiliani

In the north-east part of Paros and in a small distace from from port dominates there is the church of Ekatontapiliani Panagia, a olld christian monument which was probably built during the 4th century AD.Some legends mixed with truths claim that Agia Eleni promised the building of a big church istead of a small one in case she managed to find theHoly Cross in the Holy City where she was going.Her expctation came tue and Agia Eleni Fullfilled her promise or she put her son,Megalos Konstantinos, as some people say, to fullfill it.The royal church with the initially wooden roof was probably ruined by a fire and Ioustinianos rebuilt it adding domes and cupola.The concuerors destroyed the monument but the earthquake of 1773 was very hard and the repair that followed changed its initial image.An important rebuilding started in 1959 that gae the church the image it had in the age of Ioustinianos.The visitor can admire sculptures, that come from Demeter's church and the oldest and best maintained bapistry.Also,there is the Byzantine Museum of Paroikia which is full of rare religious heirlooms. Archaelogical Museum

This museum is situated next to the high school of Paroikia and is the trustee of the long history of the island.It has got findings fom different periods with imprortant historical and archaelogical value.There,you will find the marble idol of the "fat lady" which is a symbol of fertility,objects from grave offers,mostly fron the graveyard of Paroikia and various vessels.Furthermore,in the museum there is the statue of Niki (5th century BC).It represents a young female winged figure.Also,there is the statue of Gorgo(a mythological monster) which dates from te 6th century BC and it is pictured with the wings raised towards behind.In addition,Goddess Artemis is a large statue(3,7m)from Dilio,the statue of a female sitting deity and the half part of a statue representing Athena which all belong to te 5th century BC are put in the museum.Also,there are two relieves of herx in honor of Archilochos.There is an important ammount of glass and clay Roman vessels whereas Greek mosaics that where fou under Ekatoapiliani are exhibited outside the museum. The Archaelogical Museum has also got one of the most significnt monuments, that is ParioChronico.It is a marble inscription which was engraved in the 13th century AD and inludes 134 lines with chronological references that cover a period of 1318 years(1528-263 BC).The biggest part of that inscriprion was found in the 17th century in Venice Castle of Paroikia from where it was stolen by smugglers and was sold in an earl,

who got in Oxford and now it is kept n the museum of Oxford.The item that is kept in the archaeological musum of Paroikia was found later,in 1897,in the blcony of a house in Paroikia as part of its paving.

Ancient Pottery Workshop at Tholos

Extensive establishment of a pottery workshop, dated to the 3rd century B.C. It has two cisterns, auxiliary rooms, two spacious kilns (diameter 2m.) and four smaller ones, in the construction of which Archaic pithoi with impressed decoration were used: a) a Geometric grave b) and a wall of a large Archaic building were uncovered in the deeper strata. The

excavation started in 1986 in private land and was extended in the area of the street in 1990. The monument is now preserved in the basement of the modern building.

Old Christian Basilica

On the ruins if ancient temples that where situated in the north east of Paroikia, it was built a christian church in 525-550 AD.That church in the 17th century was destroyed and there was built the Old Christian Basilica

The Byzantine Museum of Naousa

The monastery of Agios Athanasios is located in the west part of Naoussa and within it is the museum.There are a lot of byzantine and post-byzantine icons, that are over one hundred and most of them were painted by local painters of icons.

The port of Naoussa is protected by a special fortified structure Venice Castle.It was built in the 15th century by the dynasty of Sommaripa and now it i sa very impressive sight although itis half-sunk.

Aghios Anargyrous
About 200 m east of Naoussa this beach is also sandy with a few trees.

Aghios Fokas (Paroikia)

Approximately 4 km from the centre of Paroikia, you will discover two small sandy beaches. The smaller has taverns, the larger palm lined beach hosts an organised campground. You can reach this beach via bus or car.

Alyki

Ambelas
This is a small, sheltered cove in the fishing village of the same name. Just east of Naoussa, there are a few traditional taverns.

Dryos
This is a beautiful, small sandy beach with shade trees along the waterfront of the charming village. It offers a selection of taverns and coffee bars.

Kolymbithres
This is a uniquely beautiful and quiet beach located in the western section of the Bay of Naoussa. It is characterized by the natural sculptures formed in the granite by millennia of erosion by wind and rain that create a series of semi private coves. There are a tavern and coffee bar. You can reach this beach via boat from Naoussa or by car.

Kaminia – Souvlia
These beaches are at the north-western tip of the Bay of Paroikia, stretching from Martsello to the point of “Aghio Foka”. The cave of Archilohos is very near, a large opening in the nearly vertical cliff face, where it is said that Archilohos would retire for the inspiration to write his great poems of antiquity. These beaches are also serviced via the Paroikia-Krios boat or accessed by car.

Krios

2 km from the centre of Paroikia, also on the north end of the bay, Krios offers a beach snack-bar, tavern, and an organised camp ground. The water is extremely clear and there is regular boat service to and from Paroikia port. You can also reach the beach over land via the walking path or the inland road.

Livadia

This is the popular and busy long, sandy beach at the northern side of Paroikia Bay. This beach is very organised and you will find a variety of businesses in the near vicinity.

Logaras

Next to the village of Piso Livadi you will find this large, sandy beach that is great for swimming and a variety of other sea sports. This beach has also received the “Blue Flag” and offers accommodation as well as a series of taverns, coffee houses and bars along the beach.

Langeri

Located approximately 1.5 km from Naoussa (towards Santa Maria) you will find this uniquely beautiful beach. Stretching around the eastern arm of the Bay of Naoussa its fine golden sand has formed dunes above and behind the strand. You can reach this beach by boat from Naoussa or by bus or private car (in which case be prepared for about a 20 minute walk to reach the beach).

Pounta

8,5 km south of Paroikia and 1 nautical mile directly across from Antiparos port this beach is near the small resort settlement by the same name. Very popular with kite-boarders this beach hosts the international Kite Boarding Championship every summer. You will find accommodation, taverns and a dive shop: Access by bus and car.

Parasporos

This is a famous beach approximately 2.5 km south of Paroikia. Very popular with the youth, there are also beach bars and taverns and a campground nearby. You can reach this beach by bus (to the main road) or by car.

A sheltered, sandy beach on the southern end of the island, organised for tourism with a beach bar. There is relatively easy access via dirt roads from Alyki and the Paros ring road.

Chrisi Akti

This beach is among the most beautiful and is the longest sandy beach on the island. It is a veritable paradise for lovers of sea sports offering perfect conditions for any type of sailing activity. This beach has been awarded the “Blue Flag”, is very organised with luxury hotels, rooms and studios as well as surf-clubs, restaurants and bars.

Martsello

This beach is the continuation of Krios, 2.5 km from the town centre, with access to the same amenities as Krios and serviced by the same boats/roads.

Monastiri

Also in the western section of the Bay of Naoussa, and near the “Aghios Ioannis” Monastery, this is one of the most popular beach clubs on the island. There is food and drink and it can be reached by car.

Molos

This beach stretches between the hills of Kefalos and Antikefalos, the sight of the ancient ceramic works. It is supposed that the ancient city of Yria was located at the foot of these mountains. There are a few rooms-to-let and restaurants nearby. To the right of Molos is the beach Kalogeros, it has stunning multi-coloured cliffs comprised of natural mineral clay with healing properties. It is said that the beach got its name when a monk threw himself to his death from the top of the cliff. To the left of Molos are the beaches of Tsoukalia and Glyfades, also very popular with windsurfers.

Nea Chrisi Akti

Known the world over as the ideal beach for sea sports, windsurfing in particular, in the early 1990’s this beach became the location of the annual PWA championships held every August. They offer rental and storage of boards and boats as well as lessons for beginners and advanced levels. This beach enjoys all the amenities listed for “Chrisi Akti”, and can be accessed by car or bus.

STONE AGE - NEOLITHIC PERIOD

Though there is evidence of navigation in the Aegean as early as 9,000 B.C., the first evidence of systematic communities in the Aegean Islands dates from the Neolithic Period (6,800 – 3,200 B.C.). The first evidence of community life on Paros was discovered on the small island of “Saliagko” (between Paros and Antiparos) one of the most ancient settlements in Aegean Prehistory.

BRONZE AGE (3200 - 1100 B.C.)

Three great civilisations emerged during the Bronze Age (3,200 – 1,100 B.C.) within the geographic area which comprises modern day Greece: the Cycladic Civilisation (3,200 – 2,000 B.C.), the Minoan (or “Pre-Cretan”, 2,000 – 1,500 B.C.) and the Mycenaean (1,600 – 1,100 B.C.). Remnants of a Pre-Cycladic settlement were discovered on the “Fortress Hill” above Paroikia and significant finds dating to the same period have been discovered in other areas of the island as well (Kambos, Dryos, Koukounaries, Plastiras, Glyfa and Farangas). During the Minoan dominance of the Aegean, Paros was an important strategic and commercial centre for the Minoan state. At that time the island was primarily populated by emissaries from Crete. According to Myth the leader of the occupation force was called Alkaios, he built the first city in the location of today’s Paroikia and called it “Minoa” (Royal City). With the gradual decline of Minoan Crete the power of the mainland Mycenaean dynasty increased. The remnants of a Mycenaean Acropolis were discovered on the peak above Koukounaries (near Naoussa) as well as on the “Fortress Hill” above Paroikia.
